The Birkebeiner Buzz

Recently I've been getting out of Madison and heading to less populated areas of the state. Last week I went to the Birkebeiner! (A 54K cross country ski race in Hayward, WI)

Way to go Steve!! This pic was taken after more than 3.5 hours skiing!

Nick refused to try on my hat and I can't quite figure out why.

Hayward is usually a quiet little town, but come Birkie time there are people everywhere. There were 6000 skiers + all their fans...

After the race everyone gathers in the Celebration tent to warm up and hear tales from out on the trail. My favorite was hearing about "The Bobble Heads". The Birkie is well known for it's huge hills. On some of the worst, Bobble-heads (Snowmobilers) sit at the bottom and drink and jeer skiers as they come down the hill and hopefully don't fall (or hopefully do fall depending who you ask).

Goal in Life: Find these Bobble-heads and hang out with them. Sounds like a good time.

Chris drank a humungous cup of hot chocolate. When we went to Famous Daves for dinner he also finished off a good part of his huge 1/2 pound burger and at least 3 of Suzy's ribs. Cleaned them to the BONE.
